About
Runaway Ranch Riding Lessons offers Western horseback riding lessons that include general western style riding, western riding and training, and western gaming. Riders can also take part in natural horsemanship, trick training, advanced groundwork, and mounted shooting, and the program hosts workshops, student shows, birthday parties, and fun nights with a western theme. The ranch trains and maintains over 20 horses onsite and welcomes beginner through advanced riders, with a focus on weekly riding lessons rather than trail rides, and requires that students be at least 7 years old, under 250 pounds, and looking for lessons rather than paid public trail rides, horse rental or leasing, public boarding, therapeutic riding services, or trail rides.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Lesson and event options Monday–Saturday, with a winter break each year from January 1 through March 1
Runaway Ranch Riding Lessons is led by Ryan and Krissy Lowe, with Krissy holding a Bachelor’s degree in Equine Business and Equestrian Studies with an emphasis in Western from The University of Findlay. The program has been established since 2002, has offered affordable Western horseback riding lessons in DeKalb County for over 25 years, and has developed its own program focused on western riding and training for over 20 years. Runaway Ranch states that it is all about family, friends, and enjoying horses as a community, and that it focuses on building confidence and overcoming fears in a healthy and supportive way while not operating as a show barn. The ranch is described as a family oriented farmette, is by appointment only, and hosts yearly workshops, student shows, birthday parties, fun nights, and other supervised western-themed horse activities. Runaway Ranch notes that it is Sycamore and DeKalb’s #1 riding stable and that it ranks higher than any barn like it, and any western barn like it, in its area, and it serves many Northern Illinois University students and faculty as well as students from Kane, DuPage, Boone, Ogle, and Lee counties. Ryan Lowe has earned the nickname “Flyin Ryan” for speeding through the course on his main horse, Titan.
