Cooking Classes at Common Ground Food Co-op offers in-person cooking classes, virtual cooking classes, and virtual cultural cuisine cooking classes. Common Ground Food Co-op has been community owned since 1974 and has hosted an array of classes in the Flatlander classroom since 2011. The Flatlander classroom is used for cooking classes, staff meetings, and as a space where people gather to share food and build community. The co-op strives to serve as an educational resource on food issues and offers a range of virtual cultural cuisine cooking classes and in-person classes every month.
The Whole Grain In-Person Baking Class uses locally grown and milled flours from Janie's Mill. The Greek Virtual Cooking Class & Meal Kit includes pre-portioned ingredients and recipe cards. The Embroidery & Applique Collage Art Class is open to anyone 13 and over, and all supplies are provided, with the option to bring fabric scraps and favorite scissors. The teacher for this art class, Olly Greer, is a self-taught stitcher with 15 years of experience.
Common Ground Food Co-op is a cooperatively run grocery store owned by over 9,000 Champaign-Urbana neighbors and considers local to be within 100 miles of the co-op. The Flatlander classroom has enabled Common Ground Food Co-op to fulfill its third end of being an educational resource in the community, and its education is described as accessible and varied in topic and perspective. The co-op works with local teachers and schools to create food curriculum for all ages, supports as many local farms as it can, and focuses on supporting the local food system, fostering conscious consumerism, and building a vibrant community.
Common Ground Food Co-op hosts engaging store tours geared for all ages. In 2024, it invested $1,205,390 in local and regional farms and producers and provided $23,556 in equity grants and discounts through Food For All. Since 2012, $611,451 has been donated to local organizations through Round Up For Good, and the co-op reports having 9,052 owners.
