American Academy of Gymnastics began as a small gym in Des Plaines in 1973 and later relocated to Wheeling in 1985. AAG Wheeling instructors are USA Gymnastics registered and certified by the U.S. Center for SafeSport, and the program uses a conditioning and fitness curriculum endorsed by USA Gymnastics. Its teaching philosophy focuses on skill progressions through drills, repetition, technique emphasis, and building self-confidence, with attention to strength, flexibility, coordination, stamina, balance, and overall physical fitness in a structured environment. AAG is responsible for the development of several international gymnasts, including 1992 U.S. Olympian Chris Waller, and its graduates have cumulatively earned over $4 million in college scholarships. The gym trains the Stevenson High School girls’ team, which has won four straight Illinois High School state championships, and AAG Wheeling has a partnership with Athletico. The facility includes enclosed viewing areas on the first and second floors, free WiFi, and a stocked vending machine.
