About
Indiana Ballet Conservatory offers classical and pre-professional ballet training that fuses classical ballet instruction with modern and contemporary training. Students take part in a gentlemen’s program with mentorship and training by male instructors, summer programs, and major performances. The program also presents outreach performances at hospitals, libraries, and festivals.
Indiana Ballet Conservatory was founded in 2010 by Artistic Director Alyona Yakovleva. The school uses the Vaganova curriculum, a structured, scientific dance methodology with a holistic, pedagogical approach, and bases its training on the Vaganova method, a 300-year-old foundation of excellence. The curriculum is designed to help children progress in a safe and healthy environment with age-appropriate class hours and is described as one of the most rigorous pre-professional training programs in the US and one of the strongest in the Midwest. The program’s summer offerings are described as a renowned and well-regarded summer program recognized across the country. The mission of Indiana Ballet Conservatory is to serve as a premier pre-professional ballet school dedicated to providing exceptional classical ballet training and to cultivate the next generation of dancers and prepare them to shine on the global stage.
Indiana Ballet Conservatory stages four major performances each year that expose more than 1000 Central Indiana residents to ballet. Community outreach is described as a vital part of the school, with outreach performances at various hospitals, libraries, and festivals for people who would otherwise not have the opportunity to see ballet, and the school is committed to maintaining a vibrant presence in the Central Indiana arts community. Artistic Director Alyona Yakovleva has a lifetime devoted to elevating ballet in Indiana and mentoring the next generation of artists, and she has been named one of the Indianapolis Business Journal's 2025 Women of Influence. The program offers full scholarships to talented male students in its unique gentlemen’s program with mentorship and training by male instructors and states that it is committed to honoring tradition and inspiring innovation in the classroom and onstage.
