FIRST LEGO League gives kids hands-on STEM experiences that include coding, engineering, research, and a robot game. The program has themed challenges where students build and program LEGO Education SPIKE Prime robots to navigate missions in the robot game and work on research projects that identify and solve real-world problems.

FIRST LEGO League states that its mission is to spark curiosity and confidence in young minds through hands-on STEM experiences. It is described as a global STEM program for young minds, with age-appropriate divisions that build upon each other and guide youth through STEM learning and exploration at an early age. The FIRST LEGO League Explore division is for ages 6–10 and focuses on fundamentals of engineering, real-world problems, design, coding, and creating solutions with LEGO bricks powered by LEGO Education SPIKE. The FIRST LEGO League Challenge division is for ages 9–16 and involves research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering, including building and programming a LEGO Education SPIKE Prime robot for the robot game and participating in a research project on a relevant real-world problem. Students around the world come together to take on themed challenges and connect at high-energy local and global events that celebrate creativity, collaboration, and innovation. The program states that students gain productive learning habits, confidence, and teamwork skills.
