Human Services, Inc. began in 1965 as BBJ – Community Action Program, and in 1973 the agency became Human Services, Inc. Its mission is “Bridging the gap to stability through coaching, education and partnerships.” Human Services, Inc., a Community Action Agency, offers a variety of assistance to families and individuals in need and builds community partnerships and collaborations for the purpose of reducing barriers to a population. Human Services, Inc. states that it will create solutions that lead to stability and independence for individuals and families in an ever-changing economy and diverse community, while exhibiting a high standard of excellence.
Head Start is a Federal grant funded early childhood education program, and Human Services, Inc.’s Head Start Program provides FREE early childhood services in Bartholomew, Decatur, Jackson, Johnson Counties to children 3 to 5 years old and their families. Head Start is described as a comprehensive preschool program for low-income children ages 3 through 5 and their families, and services are offered to families who have incomes below the federal poverty level. Families with children ages three to five years old who have a household income at or below 100% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, children in foster care, families that receive TANF or SSI, or children with a documented learning disability may qualify, and although the program is primarily for low-income families, some families with higher incomes may be eligible. It is stated that a parent does not have to be working or in school to qualify.
