Preschool on the Prairie takes place within Conner Prairie, a living history museum where guests engage with experiences tailored to them. The program is set in an environment that spans 1,046 acres and is part of one of the most visited outdoor museums in the nation. Conner Prairie’s mission guides the program: it is a historic place that inspires curiosity and fosters learning by providing engaging and individualized experiences for everyone.
Conner Prairie, where Preschool on the Prairie is held, is Indiana’s first Smithsonian affiliate and has held this status since 2008. Conner Prairie has earned the Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid’s GuideStar and has received multiple awards, including the 2026 Best New Experience for Promised Land as Proving Ground from the Indiana Tourism Association and the 2025 PRSA Hoosier Chapter Award of Honor for its Headless Horseman Campaign. Additional recognition includes 2023 reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, the 2022 Run it Back award from Dream Alive, and being named Best Historical Site in Midwest Living’s Best of the Midwest 2022. Conner Prairie was recognized by the Indianapolis Star’s 2020 Official Community Choice Awards as the Best Historical Site and Best Summer Camp and has been noted as one of the top five most visited outdoor museums in the United States. As a Smithsonian affiliate, Conner Prairie connects visitors with artworks, historic objects, and scientific specimens from the Smithsonian’s national collections and may offer special educational programs for preschool and kindergarten through grade 12 students and adult learners.
