Human Services, Inc. began in 1965 as BBJ – Community Action Program, and in 1973 the agency became Human Services, Inc. It is described as a Community Action Agency that offers a variety of assistance to families and individuals in need and maintains services throughout South Central Indiana, serving Bartholomew, Decatur, Jackson, Johnson, and Shelby counties. Some of the agency’s earliest programs included the Head Start Summer program, Food Buyers program, the Feeder Pig Project, the Cabin Craftsman’s Center, and a Sewing Cooperative, and later initiatives included programs to assist with legal needs, housing, family planning, community planning, and the VISTA volunteer program.
The agency’s mission is “Bridging the gap to stability through coaching, education and partnerships,” and its vision states that Human Services, Inc. will create solutions that lead to stability and independence for individuals and families in an ever-changing economy and diverse community, while exhibiting a high standard of excellence. The Agency Board of Directors includes representatives from Bartholomew, Decatur, Jackson, Johnson, and Shelby counties, and the Head Start Policy Council liaisons are listed as Pam Weakley and Jessica Elifritz.
