• Schedule: Recreational clinics are held nearly twice per month.
The RHI Adaptive Sports Program began in 1996 with an adaptive water ski clinic created by therapists at Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana and became a Paralympic Sport Club in 2008. The program is the primary provider of adaptive sports opportunities for individuals with disabilities in central Indiana, including Indianapolis and surrounding areas, and specializes in serving youth and adults with spinal cord, orthopedic, neuromuscular, and visual impairments. The mission of the RHI Adaptive Sports Program is to provide competitive and non-competitive athletic opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities to enhance quality of life, promote physical fitness, introduce recreational and wheelchair sports, and challenge participants to perform at a competitive level.
Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana is a community collaboration between IU Health and Ascension St. Vincent. RHI has 20 Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses on staff. RHI is the only NIDILRR Traumatic Brain Injury Model System in Indiana and one of 16 such systems nationwide. The program is a sponsor of the Hoosier Hoops Classic wheelchair basketball tournament, which is a National Wheelchair Basketball Association sanctioned tournament. Karen Lawrence is the contact for getting involved with the RHI Adaptive Sports Program.
A traumatic brain injury survivor, Cindy Urich, said, “I'm back to work. I'm back to driving...The care was absolutely phenomenal. I feel like RHI gave me my winning combination to succeed and to go back into the workforce and back to my life.”
