Since their founding in 2020, Step Up Tutoring has supported more than 8,300 2nd–6th grade students from underserved communities. The program mobilizes a national network of tutors to provide free, one-on-one online tutoring and mentorship to 2nd–6th grade students from underserved communities. Tutors are paired with AI-powered learning software and a research-backed curriculum in a hybrid human-tech model that uses trained volunteers, Federal Work-Study college students, AI-powered tutor feedback tools, and adaptive learning technology personalized to each student's needs. College students paid through Federal Work-Study from over 40 colleges across the country typically serve three students each, while community volunteers typically serve one student each.

Tutors receive training and ongoing coaching, and all tutors are vetted, selected, and background checked. Tutors complete Step Up’s training, which was co-developed with ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and Stanford University’s National Student Support Accelerator. The leadership team includes Sam Olivieri (Chief Executive Officer), Angelo DiNardi (Chief Technology Officer), Annie Johansen (Director of Learning Innovation), Atiya Davis (Tutor Operations and Partnerships Manager), Camille Velasco (Family Coordinator), Charmaine Ho (Senior Director, Recruiting & Onboarding), Dani De La Cruz (Family Experience Coordinator), Daniel Halper (Co-Founder, Head of Step Up Labs), and Erin King (Senior Manager, Tutor Recruitment).

Step Up Tutoring partners with over 40 districts and charter networks across Los Angeles, the Bay Area, New York City, DC, and Arizona. Community volunteers are recruited through service organizations, and tutors gain direct experience and exposure to careers in education, building a teacher pipeline. Reported outcomes include improved math performance by 22 percentile points (from the 38th to the 60th percentile), 86% of students feeling more confident in math and reading after tutoring with Step Up, 97% of students believing their tutor cares about them, 94% of tutors reporting being personally impacted by the experience, and 82% of high school and college tutors reporting that Step Up increased their interest in teaching.
