About

Swim Lessons introduces swimmers to swimming lessons and water safety skills such as floating, treading water, and safely entering and exiting a pool. The program also offers competitive swim teams, private and semi-private swim lessons, and time for open swim. Each swimmer receives a Certificate of Achievement during the last lesson, and each swimmer can practice their skills before or after class if open swim is available and they are members of the YMCA.

• Ages: 0–18 years old

Swimming programs are led by trained instructors who are certified in CPR and First Aid in addition to their formal swim instructor training. Swim lessons are available for all ages, from infants to adults, and programs are tailored to every age and skill level. Items needed for lessons include a swimsuit and towel, and goggles are recommended but not required, with clear lenses recommended for new swimmers. If the swimmer is not potty trained, they are required to wear a swim diaper, and all other items needed for lessons are provided by the instructor. If the swimmer is registered for the A/ Water Discovery and B/ Water Exploration levels, a parent or guardian needs to be in the water for all swim lessons. Parents and guardians are encouraged to watch the swim lessons but must stay at least 10 feet away from the pool. Red band swimmers are required to wear a life jacket and have a supervising adult in the water with them. There are no make-ups for missed classes, whether the swimmer is sick, out of town, unable to attend, or lessons are cancelled due to inclement weather. If there is lightning within 10 miles, or if thunder is heard, there is immediate closure of the pool deck for no less than 30 minutes from the last lightning strike or sound of thunder. The YMCA uses “Test, Mark and Protect” as its benchmark swim test. The YMCA has been America’s leading swim instructor for more than 100 years. Since 1853, the YMCA of Central Kentucky has focused on empowering young people, improving health and well-being, and inspiring action in and across communities. Its mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The YMCA of Central Kentucky is one of the nation’s leading nonprofits for strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, and the YMCA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
