Christian Youth Theater (CYT) was founded in 1981 and has grown to be the largest youth theater program in the nation, with affiliates across the country training thousands of students a year. CYT Lafayette is a licensed affiliate of CYT Inc., and each local program offers camps and classes for ages 4–18 and full-scale productions for ages 8–18. Enrolled students have the opportunity to audition and perform or work behind the scenes in a Broadway-style musical performed for the community.

Instructors are professionals, qualified in teaching and/or performing, who understand the mission statement, values, objectives, and goals. The leadership team for Christian Youth Theater Lafayette includes founders Gerald and Patti Broussard, Artistic Director Kallie Theriot, Branch Coordinator Tiffany Hochkeppel, and multiple coordinators and managers for chapters, shows, camps, technical theater, sets, props, costumes, media, business, improv, and youth leadership.

Christian Youth Theater’s stated mission is to develop Christ-like character and creativity in kids through quality theater arts training that brings families and communities together while reflecting Jesus. CYT states a commitment to the highest ethical, moral, technical, and artistic standards of excellence and to maintaining a community where all participants can work and learn together free of harassment, misconduct, or abuse of any kind, including verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual.

CYT uses The Safety Scene program, which goes beyond background checks to prevent, detect, and respond to physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual abuse in CYT programming, and this program is active and available to all CYT branches across the country. A confidential website (www.lighthouse-services.com/cyt) has been set up for any local CYT participants, volunteers, or employees to report concerns, and it is staffed by a third-party firm that reports concerns to the CYT Inc. staff and Board of Directors. The National Child Abuse Hotline (1-800-4-A-CHILD) is listed as a resource that offers crisis intervention, information, and referrals, with all calls, texts, and chats described as confidential.

Parent and student comments about CYT include: “It’s amazing to see a child grow & blossom right before your eyes – really Incredible” from a CYT mom, and “Everyone is just so wonderful and caring it’s the best experience I’ve ever had” from a CYT student.
