9 Acres Equestrian Center Day Camp
9 Acres Equestrian Center, 12211 S. GRANGE ROAD, Palos Park, LA 60464
About
9 Acres Equestrian Center Day Camps include daily riding instruction, safety around the barn, grooming and bathing, proper saddling and bridling, and basic first aid. Campers learn about the anatomy of the horse, horse breeds and colors, and take part in a horse-related craft and educational games. The program offers both English style riding and Western style riding, and all day camps are run by one of the riding instructors. On the first day, each camper is assigned a horse to take care of for the week, and equestrian helmets are required and provided, while bike helmets are not acceptable.
• Ages: 7–13 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 10am–3pm
• Price: $480 per camper
All campers receive a camp shirt on the first day and are required to wear it daily. Boots with a low heel are strongly recommended, though gym shoes are acceptable, and campers are asked to wear jeans or long pants rather than shorts. Riding gloves are not required and can be chosen at a parent’s discretion, with grips on the palms or fingers recommended and many winter gloves noted as too slippery to hold the reins properly. For colder months, dressing in layers is recommended, and for summer camp, bug spray and sunscreen are suggested because many activities are outdoors. Campers are asked to bring a sack lunch and a water bottle each day, and parents are asked to inform the office on the first day of any medical conditions or medications needed, including allergies.
9 Acres Equestrian Center Day Camps are led by owners Pat and John Doyle of Fitzjoy Farm Riding Academy and Maggie Doyle, the new additional owner of 9 Acres Equestrian Center. The program is part of a teaching and boarding facility that has operated successfully for decades. According to the program’s mission statement, the horse stable has been an escape for many riders, from leisure riders to what they describe as “real horse addicts,” and it states that it has been the staff’s pleasure to be part of that experience.
