About

Andover Summer takes place at Phillips Academy and is connected to the school’s broader academic and student life structure, which includes more than 300 courses with 150 electives and an average class size of 13 students. Students interact with five or six different instructors each term and have regular 30-minute conference periods as part of the academic model. Each student is assigned to one of five clusters—Abbot, Flagstaff, Pine Knoll, West Quad North, or West Quad South—and has a Core Team of adults that includes a point person, advisor, and cluster dean.

The program is part of Phillips Academy, an independent, coeducational secondary school founded in 1778, which is the nation’s oldest incorporated boarding school. Phillips Academy states a mission as an independent, coeducational secondary school with an expansive worldview and a legacy of academic excellence. The school has offered need-blind admission for 18 years and meets 100% of each student’s demonstrated financial need.

Campus resources connected to the program include the Rebecca M. Sykes Wellness Center, which offers medical services, psychological counseling, and community wellness programs, with a nurse on site 24/7 and a physician and counselor on-call while school is in session. Campus Safety officers patrol 24/7 and are always ready to assist, and the Campus Safety and Community Relations Officer is identified as Officer Wendy Cogswell. The Community and Multicultural Office (CAMD) sponsors workshops, lectures, and educational programs and contains a small library, and the Academic Skills Center hosts workshops on time management, organizational, and study skills.

Leadership associated with Phillips Academy includes Raynard Kington, MD, PhD, P’24, ’27 as the 16th Head of School; Leeann Bennett as Director of Human Resources; Caroline Odden as Dean of Studies and Physics Instructor; Dianne Domenech-Burgos as Chief of Staff and Assistant Head of School for Strategic Planning; Jenny Savino P’21, ’24 as Director of Alumni Engagement; and Katherine Solimini as Associate Director of Family Giving. Community engagement is a regular part of school life, with more than 400 students engaged in community engagement programs each term. Testimonials from community members include Raynard Kington’s statement that “Non sibi is an ideal that aligns with the values that I learned growing up, and it resonates with me at a deep level,” Susan Esty P’22 describing her role as “a bridge between different groups and a partner with lots of different people,” and Pete Dignard ’07 saying, “Andover is a place where it is cool to be smart and kindness matters.”
