About
The Biomedical Research Summer of Science Internship Program is a ten-week, full-time research internship where interns take part in hands-on scientific research. Interns spend their time designing and executing experiments, analyzing their own data, learning new experimental techniques, and evaluating scientific articles in a fun and interactive setting. The program also includes participating in group projects, workshops, team-building activities, welcome and farewell events, leadership development workshops, community engagement activities onsite, and cohort-led residential events, and interns showcase their results to the broader Novartis Biomedical Research (BR) community.
• Schedule: Ten-week Summer of Science Internship Program; Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. EST (United States contact center hours) and Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. GMT+1 (Global contact center hours)
• Price: The program is a paid, full-time research opportunity, and pay is competitive with local internship wages.
The program follows a cohort model internship structure that is built on the foundation of science, leadership, and community, and is designed to engage talented undergraduate students and recent college graduates in drug discovery research together with rigorous training and development opportunities. Interns work on their own research project under the guidance of a BR scientist mentor, and BR’s research covers many disease, science, and technology areas that allow close matching of each intern’s specific interests with one of the labs. Double majors and minors in both STEM and business or finance are encouraged to apply for a limited number of slots to be paired with BR finance supervisors. Financial support for housing, travel, and local transit systems is provided based on the company’s non-discriminatory assessment, and in Cambridge, health insurance is provided to those who will not have continuous coverage from another source during the summer.
Interns are supervised by BR scientists who are described as passionate about patient-driven approaches to drug discovery research and motivated to enhance students’ preparation for doctoral degree programs. Applicants must have a strong desire to pursue a Ph.D. in a biomedical field, and students who are enrolled in Ph.D., Master’s, PharmD, or M.D. programs are not eligible to apply to this program. Novartis states that it is an innovative medicines company that works every day to reimagine medicine to improve and extend people’s lives so that patients, healthcare professionals, and societies are empowered in the face of serious disease.
The program encourages students from all backgrounds to apply, including those attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) or Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), as well as students from IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) programs in IDeA-states and Puerto Rico. The program also strongly encourages applications from community-minded individuals seeking to learn, grow, and contribute to a robust cohort.
