About

Nature Forts is a camp that centers on building forts in a forest base camp and nearby woods, using sticks, logs, fabric, and other found and natural materials. During the week, children take part in activities such as drawing plans for construction ideas, making models out of clay, hanging out in a hammock, and going on forest hikes and field frolics. The program also includes free play, exploring the woods, building fairy houses, and picnic-style meals at picnic tables or on beds of clover in the play yard.

• Ages: 5–8 years old
• Schedule: Camps run from 8:30am–3:30pm, Monday–Friday. The week of 6/16 will be a four-day camp with no camp Thursday, 6/19. The week of 6/30 will be a four-day camp with no camp Friday, 7/4.
• Price: Each camp will cost $375. The cost for the weeks of 6/16 and 6/30 (four-day camps) will be $325. Baking Camp will have an additional $10 fee for consumable supplies.

Nature Forts is part of The Center School, which is described as a progressive, independent day school serving Preschool–8th grade and offering a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities. The Center School states that it is a loving community that celebrates each child’s unique personality, intelligence, and passion, and that it is a responsive learning environment offering rigor and play in balanced abundance. The mission of The Center School includes integrating academic, social, emotional, physical, and artistic learning; collaborating with students to co-construct knowledge through exciting and open-ended processes; encouraging children and adults to form a vision of social justice and equitable, compassionate communities through active participation; inviting students to approach every project and subject area with curiosity, critical thinking, and a spirit of inquiry; and fostering a culture of connection and collaboration in which children feel known, valued, and motivated to learn and grow.

Rebecca Golden has been a teacher at The Center School since 2005 and currently teaches in the outdoor K/1 class. Grace Kelly is a Center School After School teacher and has several years of experience working with children in outdoor settings. Amy is a current Center School teacher in the Forest program and has worked at the school for 15 years in various roles including intern in Middles, Uppers team, After School, and Preschool. Val Driscoll is a current Center School teacher in the K/1 Forest program and previously spent 11 years as the art studio teacher at the Smith College Center for Early Childhood Education at Fort Hill.

This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and is licensed by the local board of health.
