About
Power Kids Summer Enrichment Program includes daily gym time, game time, arts and crafts, community projects, and a PK Morning Assembly. A typical day also includes a walk to Tufts Park for movement activities, lunch, changing for swimming, swimming at Tufts Pool, time at the playground, ice pops, and a PK Closing Circle.
• Ages: 6–11 years old
• Schedule: Five program weeks (July 6, July 13, July 20, July 27, August 3), 9:00 AM–3:00 PM, with an early morning drop-off option from 8:00–9:00 AM and an extended day option from 3:00–5:00 PM
Power Kids Summer Enrichment Program has been operating since 2007. The program follows weekly themes of Kindness (week 1), Honesty (week 2), Responsibility (week 3), Resilience/Grit (week 4), and Cooperation (week 5). It is described as a one-of-a-kind summer enrichment program which empowers children by helping them support their peers and community, and since 2007 it has been helping children support their peers and community.
The program’s founder and director is Michael Coates, also listed as Power Kids Founder Michael M. Coates, M.S. Program counselors include Maria Amato-Coates and support staff. Most of the lead counselors are experienced classroom teachers who teach positive social skills while the kids have summertime fun. Michael M. Coates holds a master’s degree in education from Wheelock College in Boston, is licensed as an elementary educator in Massachusetts, has a B.S. in business communication and speech from Emerson College, and has been an elementary educator in the Medford Public School system since 1995, currently teaching third grade at Brooks Elementary School. Maria Amato-Coates was an elementary teacher at the Bishop School in Arlington, Massachusetts from 1997–2018 and is currently a K–5 literacy coach for Arlington Public Schools; she holds a master’s degree in education from Harvard Graduate School of Education, obtained her teaching license at the University of Massachusetts Boston, is licensed in grades 1–6, and completed undergraduate work at Emerson College in Communications, Politics, and Law.
Power Kids received Medford's Key to the City in 2014 from Mayor Michael McGlynn for outstanding and dedicated service to the community. Michael is the Center for Citizenship and Social Responsibility advisor for the Brooks Elementary School from 2017–2019 and 2022–2025, and the mission of the CCSR is to develop responsible global leaders and citizens who will be positive contributors to society and will work to combat social issues such as global warming, addiction, prejudice, racism, pollution, gender bias, poverty, public education, and healthcare.
