About
Fells Forest Camp includes self-guided explorations of the forest, unstructured time-in-nature, opportunistic nature interpretation, self-directed learning and exploration, exploration, and group games. Campers take part in nature journaling, hands-on art projects, and exploring ecosystems, habitats, forest layers, and insects and bugs living in the Middlesex Fells Reservation. The program also includes a service-learning project to benefit trails and habitats in the Lawrence Woods section of the Fells and activities that involve using tools safely.
• Ages: 4–12 years old
• Schedule: Multiple one-week sessions from June 22 through August 14
Under the leadership of experienced camp counselors and Friends of the Fells year round board and field staff, campers participate in a 2:10 ratio with 2 counselors and 10 campers. The flagship program engages children ages 4–12 in self-guided explorations of the forest, with activities guided by the kids’ interests rather than a schedule set in stone. Additional programming in art and science is available for families looking for a more structured experience. The Art in Nature program (for ages 6–7 and 8–9) focuses on connecting children to nature through hands-on art projects. The Forest Up Close program (for ages 8–10) engages children in how to think and talk like scientists and to explore details of the forest. The Science and Discovery program (for ages 7–9) provides a robust, hands-on curriculum for science enthusiasts. The Trailblazers program (for ages 10–12) is a full day program that gives the oldest campers the opportunity to make a positive and lasting impact on the Lawrence Woods. Camp is a rain-or-shine program, and time is spent outdoors unless it is unsafe due to thunder, lightning, or high winds, and campers use porta-potties at basecamp as bathroom facilities.
Campers will need to be outside in hot, humid temperatures and rain, hike in the woods over uneven, rugged terrain with a backpack, be comfortable using porta-potties, and be fully potty trained and able to go to the bathroom without diapers. The mission of Friends of the Middlesex Fells is promoting the conservation, appreciation, and sustainable enjoyment of the Fells. The program’s partner Earthwise Aware has produced several iNaturalist guides of the Fells.
