About

Discovery Schoolhouse offers activities such as reading stories, playing guitar, making “Gak,” playing outside, swinging on the swings, and special events like a BBQ and a spaghetti dinner. Children also take trips to the library on Fridays as part of the program.

• Ages: 1–18 years old
• Schedule: Open Monday–Friday, 7:00am–6:00pm the entire calendar year (until 5:00pm on Fridays)

Discovery Schoolhouse states that it provides a warm, nurturing, supportive, educational, and enjoyable experience for children from 15 months through five. The program is a non-profit organization and is adding infants in the fall of 2024. It also offers afternoon, vacation, and summer arts experiences for elementary students, tweens, teens, and adults through its Discovery Arts! programs.

The leadership team includes Executive Director, Teacher, and Founder Brian Scheff; Assistant Director and Teacher Mary Shields; and teachers Mary Clare Blankenship, Ylen Rodriguez, and Motoko “Moco” Kinoshita. Staff credentials include degrees and coursework in Early Childhood Education, English, and child care programming, as well as Massachusetts EEC Teacher Infant/Toddler and Teacher Preschool certifications and Department of Early Education and Care preschool teacher certification.

Discovery Schoolhouse purchased its property in August 2023 and has also bought an adjoining lot to create a natural playground. The program thanks the Town Meeting, the Select Board, the Library Trustees, and others for their support, and notes that the Milton Early Childhood Alliance (MECA) provides support and resources for families of young children and local early childhood professionals.

Testimonials from former students mention reading stories, a teacher playing guitar, going to the library on Fridays, making “Gak,” playing outside, swinging on the swings, attending the BBQ and spaghetti dinner, learning about friendship, taking turns, the calendar, days of the week, ABCs, colors, and numbers, and keeping journals from their time at Discovery Schoolhouse.
