The Gladys Allen Brigham Community Center is a multi-service organization whose mission is to empower children and youth, with a special emphasis on girls, to become responsible, confident, personally fulfilled individuals. It continues to be an affiliate of the national Girls Inc. organization and provides programs in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, supported by Berkshire United Way investments aligned with county-wide priorities. It has partners referred to as “Our Partners” and received a lead gift from General Electric for the present building, as well as grant support to create the Building Education Network (BEN). The organization has a history as one of Berkshire County’s largest social service organizations providing guidance, support, and advocacy for girls and their families. The Brigham Center’s history includes its beginning on Bank Row in 1911 as the Young Women’s Home Association, relocation to East Street in 1924, the opening of Camp Witawentin in 1929 as the first resident camp for area girls later joined by Camp Stevenson, the opening of the present building with an attached swimming pool in 1958, a renovation campaign launched in 1999 with work completed in 2003, a $500,000 gift from H. Day Brigham in 2005 that led to the current name, completion of the Outdoor Classroom in 2014, and grant support in 2015 to create BEN.
