About

Adventure Camps at Alice Ferguson Foundation includes adventure camps where participants hike forest trails, study aquatic ecosystems, and join nature hikes along wet meadow boardwalk and wooded trails. The program also includes campfires with s’mores and connects participants to the Potomac River Watershed Cleanup and other regional cleanup events, volunteer opportunities, and professional development workshops.

The Alice Ferguson Foundation was established in 1954 and was the first overnight outdoor education center in the region. Since 1954, it has provided transformative environmental education experiences for over 1 million area students and has been sharing the wonder of nature with local area students, adults, and teachers for more than 70 years. Its mission is to inspire environmental stewardship by giving people the tools to understand, appreciate, and protect nature. The organization supports schools looking to become a Maryland Green School or recertify. Regional cleanup events and volunteer opportunities engage more than 10,000 community members each year in activities such as removing trash from riverbanks and planting for pollinators. One teacher from Rosa Parks Elementary School in October 2019 said that students do not get many chances to go outside and explore and that being able to see and touch what they are learning helps them remember and see how science affects them in real life.
