CTY day sites offer three-week courses where students come to campus on weekdays to attend classes, eat lunch, and take part in various activities. CTY residential sites offer three-week courses where students live on campus while taking classes and spending time in an active, diverse, and inclusive community, and CTY online courses connect students in virtual classrooms with a global community of peers.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Three-week day and residential course sessions
Founded in 1979, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth has been involved in gifted education for more than 45 years. It is a nonprofit academic center of Johns Hopkins University and a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization serving bright learners and their families. CTY is accredited for grades K through 12 by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. Its mission is to deliver academic excellence and transformational experiences to advanced learners in grades 2–12, and to advance the field of gifted education through research on testing, programs, and other resources and support for academically advanced young students and their families. CTY states that every program, course, and research initiative is informed by a commitment to understanding how exceptional students from every community and demographic are best supported to achieve their potential as scholars and global citizens.
Parents of CTY Online Courses report that their children have taken many CTY courses, become more self-reliant in learning, and found the level of academic rigor different from what they experienced in school. They describe online programs as offering academic value that can be accessed from anywhere and as a convenient addition to regular schoolwork. One parent of an in-person student notes that their child’s teacher observed straight A grades and readiness for a high honors class after attending CTY, and another parent describes their daughter enjoying being in a dorm with other girls taking subjects such as number theory and astrophysics.
