• Ages: 0–18 years old
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The program is based on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy, and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. It states that sports must be adapted only as necessary to meet the needs of those with mental and physical limitations, and that consistent training is indispensable to the development of an individual’s sports skills. It also states that competition among those of equal abilities is the most appropriate way to test these skills, measure progress, and provide incentives for personal growth. In addition to sports training, it offers other programs besides sports training that are available to all Marylanders and states its purpose as creating a world where opportunity is not limited by disability through sport.
Special Olympics Maryland relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to support sports training and competition experiences for athletes.
"Let me win; but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." -Special Olympics Athlete Oath
