Since 1976, Wonders Early Learning + Extended Day has provided high quality learning environments parents can trust and depend upon, with a goal of offering non-profit, high quality child care to working families. The organization is a nonprofit provider of NAEYC accredited and licensed early childhood education, licensed before and after school care, and licensed summer camps, with flexible programs for children from two months through Grade 8 and nine locations in Montgomery County, MD and Washington, DC. Wonders teachers are described as engaged and good with children, and many are pursuing advanced degrees in education, with approximately 80% of the annual budget directed to staff compensation. The leadership team includes Executive Director Joanne Hurt and multiple Program and Assistant Directors, including Kyria Woodard, Faye Holland, Nick Moon, Lori Schantz, Eryn Mitchell, Miciel DeMarco, Ndara Miles, Chris Powers, Ranz Cunanan, Kiana Stewart, Shawntay Cook, Joi Simmons, and Stephanie Perry. Wonders also provides lunch and snacks, and at one center the playground is located right outside, which parents report helps build a close-knit community. Parents describe Wonders as an early childhood learning center that helped their children learn and grow, an excellent introduction to school for a 3-year-old, and the best after school program they could imagine, with a wide variety of activities and plenty of supervised freedom. Parents also note that kids stay in the same class all year long with the same teachers and classmates, that Wonders retains teachers by paying at the top of the market, and that the schedule stays open even when schools are closed or delayed except for the most extreme weather. Multiple parents express that their children love the teachers and activities, that the staff is warm, caring, and attentive, and that they feel grateful for the care, communication, and sense of a “second home” their families have experienced at Wonders.
