Zen Karate Academy offers kid's karate, adult's karate, women's self defense, and women's only karate. The program teaches Traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate and offers self defense seminars, including women self defense and sexual assault prevention workshops, rape prevention techniques and strategies, and a program called Street Aware and You in You.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes are offered on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at various times in the mornings and evenings.
Zen Karate Academy has been teaching Karate for more than 30 years. The leadership team includes Founder and Chief Instructor Sensei Senbag Rajamani, who holds a 5th Degree Black Belt in the World Karate Association and a 6th Degree in the International Union of Karate-Do Organizations (IUKO) and has been practicing Shotokan Karate-Do since 1985 and teaching since 1988. Instructors include Sensei Dhyan Rajamani, who has been practicing Shotokan Karate since 2002 and earned his World Karate Association Second Dan Black Belt in 2011, Sensei Yoga Rajamani, who has been practicing Shotokan Karate since 2004 and earned her World Karate Association Second Dan Black Belt in 2019, and Sensei Mythili Menon, who has been practicing Karate since 2010 and holds a second degree Black Belt. All dojo instructors are CPR certified and trained in the Sports Injury Prevention program.
Zen Karate Academy is a member of the World Karate Association - USA headed by Sensei Thomas Casale and is affiliated with USA Karate, which was formerly known as the United States of America National Karate-do Federation (USA-NKF). Sensei Senbag Rajamani is an Executive board member of WKA-PanAM and the International Union of Karate-Do Organizations (IUKO) and has participated in and won several international, national, and regional tournaments in India and the UAE, and has been awarded as a Best Instructor many times. Sensei Dhyan Rajamani has earned first place in many state, regional, and national tournaments conducted by USA National Karate Federation (USA NKF), AAU Karate tournaments, and NASKA, and won Grand Champion in Kata and Kumite in the Black Belt division at the VA State NKF Championship 2014 and was Runner up in Kata and Kumite at the World Karate Association World Championship in Cancun, Mexico in 2012. Sensei Yoga Rajamani has placed first or second in many state, regional, and national tournaments conducted by USA National Karate Federation, AAU Karate tournaments, and NASKA, and was Runner up in Kata at the World Karate Association World Championship in Cancun, Mexico in 2012.
Sensei Senbag Rajamani has conducted many seminars and organized rallies to support World Peace, National Integration, Environmental Protection, and Women Empowerment with support from organizations such as Lions Club, Rotary Club, and Sierra Club, and has conducted free workshops on rape prevention techniques and strategies and Street Aware and You in You. Sensei Dhyan Rajamani and Sensei Yoga Rajamani have organized many self defense seminars in the Germantown, MD community and each conducted a Women Self defense workshop as a fundraiser for Nepal Earth Quake Relief, and Sensei Yoga Rajamani completed her Girl Scout Gold Award by conducting seven Women self defense and Sexual Assault prevention workshops.
