It Takes a Village to Help Our Children, Inc. operates as a 21st Century Community Learning Center and is the only afterschool program operating Monday–Friday in its community. The organization currently offers afterschool and summer programs and provides afterschool, summer, and college and career access programs to more than 200 “at risk” youth ages 4–17 each year. In 2009, It Takes A Village Organization, Inc. and Help Our Children Foundation, Inc. merged to form It Takes A Village To Help Our Children, Inc. The combined organization serves more than 200 youth ages 5–17 and operates afterschool and summer programs until the Dr. H. Dwyane Whittington Multicultural Center is completed.
The mission of It Takes a Village to Help Our Children, Inc. is to engage the “village” to help build a better future for children by providing activities designed to promote their spiritual, social, and educational well-being so that they can reach their fullest potential. The organization is a 501(c)3 non-profit that has been featured on the Governor’s Office for Crime Control and Prevention website under Promising Practices. The Executive Director received a Certificate of Excellence from MSDE 21st Century After School Programs for Lights On support to Maryland’s after school programs. The program serves children on both ends of Somerset County, Maryland.
