About

Greenbelt Children's Center offers play-based activities that include swimming, wading, and water play, as well as use of climbers, slides, a sandbox, swings, and a playhouse. Children also have access to a mud kitchen, construction blocks, and an outdoor easel as part of the program’s activities.

• Ages: 2–12 years old

The center’s mission is to provide high quality, culturally appropriate and diverse early childhood education and care through play-based, developmentally appropriate practices that enrich cognitive, social, physical, and emotional development. The mission also includes recognizing and supporting parents as their child’s first and lifelong teachers, partnering with them for the benefit of their child, supporting all children and families to the best of the center’s abilities, and being a responsible corporate partner in the community.

Greenbelt Children's Center’s teachers and director meet or exceed the requirements of the Maryland State Department of Education, Office of Child Care. The core teaching staff are dedicated to the mission, and some have worked together for over 25 years at this location. Classroom 2 serves children ages 2.5–3 years old and is on the left as families enter the center. Classroom 1 is the Prince George’s Public School Pre-K and is at the far left adjacent to Room 2. Classroom 3, for 4-year-old children in the private accredited pre-kindergarten program and the School Age Summer Program, is located to the immediate right of the front door entrance, with the director’s office immediately adjacent to Classroom 3.

Greenbelt Children’s Center offers top-quality age-appropriate preschool and Summer programs and also offers a School Age Summer Program. Programs are designed to allow parents to be involved in their child’s education. Families are encouraged to help their child with language and literacy in five learning areas of language: building vocabulary and language skills, learning about books and print, developing comprehension, learning about letters, and learning about sounds in words. Maryland Child Care Scholarship Vouchers are accepted by Greenbelt Children’s Center. Greenbelt Children’s Center has paused visits due to Covid but will resume when they believe it to be safer.

Greenbelt Children’s Center has earned four Maryland Excels Achievement Badges: Quality Business Practices, Asthma Friendly Child Care, Health and Wellness, and Accredited Center. The center has been accredited since 1999 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and was re-accredited through the year 2028. Greenbelt Children’s Center has a Level 5 rating with the Maryland State Department of Education, which is the highest level possible, and it was the first center in Maryland to reach that level. Greenbelt Children’s Center is licensed by the MSDE Office of Child Care, License #32977.

In April 2012, the center’s director, Flora Gee, received the Judith P. Hoyer Award from Prince George’s Early Childhood Interagency Committee at the Celebrate Children Conference. Greenbelt Children’s Center received a Small Business of the Year Award from the Prince George’s County Board of Trade in 2005 and the Child Care Challenge Award from the Maryland Women Legislators in the late 1990s. The center’s stated community role includes being a responsible corporate partner in the community.
