Camps Airy & Louise were founded in 1924 and 1922 respectively, and Camp Louise has been helping children for 100 summers. The camps describe themselves as brother-sister Jewish overnight camps with a single-gender environment and a Jewish and inclusive camp identity. Camps Airy & Louise state that they provide Jewish children in grades 2 through 12 from all economic backgrounds with opportunities for self-growth and life skills that enhance their Jewish identity in a single-gender environment, while creating friendships that last a lifetime. The camps observe Shabbat in a pluralistic way and offer co-ed activities with Camp Airy that foster a positive relationship with the brother camp.

Camps Airy & Louise are fully accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and meet or exceed standards set by ACA and the Maryland Youth Camp Safety Act. The camps have Health Centers on site, 24-hour security coverage, and dining halls with space for 600+ campers. Two physicians and up to five registered nurses are on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A campership program offers financial aid for campers in need.

Bunkhouses have comfortable wooden bunk beds, extra thick mattresses, and storage space for each camper, and at Camp Louise each bunk has its own bathroom with shower, toilet, and sink. Campers’ laundry is done for them, and staff are able to do their laundry at a number of locations across both camp sites. Multipurpose dining halls have air-conditioning, projectors, and sound systems with space for 600+ campers, and the kitchens are described as fully modern, clean, and hygienic.

Through community service, Camps Airy & Louise extend a warm, welcoming, and inclusive community, and the founders wished to provide the values and development of a camping experience to Jewish children from Baltimore and the surrounding area, regardless of their economic background. One former camper and current parent, Josh F., says that Camps Airy & Louise are more than just summer camps and calls them communities that provide children and teens with outlets for individuality and lifelong friends. Former camper Mandi S. says she is happy for all the summers spent on the mountain with the girls and women of Camp Louise and that she enjoys going back for reunions. Former camper and current parent Jessica A. says she cannot stress the importance of camp and thanks Camps Airy & Louise. Former camper, current parent, and staff member Sara S. describes Camps Airy & Louise as an incredible place where friends become family and says camp gives kids of all ages the opportunity to take risks in a safe environment, learn new skills, develop independence, and build lifelong relationships.
