• Ages: 5–16 years old
• Schedule: Eleven weeks of summer camps with summer hours Monday–Friday, 8am–6pm
Impulse City offers year round learning, friendship, fun, and creative play, with eleven weeks of summer camps and after school enrichment classes. The program is described as kid centered and community driven, with many different classes based on choice, where participants select activities and learn by doing, creating, and discovering. The daily schedule includes voice and choice, with students having input on what they are learning, choices on outcomes, and a say in their knowledge acquisition.
The program states that it focuses on creating safe and inclusive spaces by building community, modeling inclusive behaviors and language, sharing clear expectations of behavior and learning, leading with love, paying it forward through kindness and respect, seeing the good in each child, and teaching children to grow into who they are meant to be. It prioritizes time for social emotional learning by helping students learn self care strategies, facilitating collaboration between students, and maintaining a balance of sharing love and setting healthy boundaries. Celebrations of Learning include performances, art shows, tech expos, sports playoffs, and community events.
Impulse City states that it believes behind every behavior is a need, that everyone’s brain sees things differently, that learning to work together even during disagreements is a key to success, that words are used to express feelings instead of violence, and that everyone deserves recognition and love, summarized as “Attention = Love!” The leadership team is Keith and Sara Nelkin, and the program states that it finds the “absolute BEST teachers.”
