Mount Rainier Nature & Recreation Center is described as Prince George’s County’s only urban nature center with hands-on exhibits, live animals, educational displays, a game room, an outdoor amphitheater, a campfire pit, and a playground. The center has a fully-equipped recreation room available to rent for meetings and special occasions, as well as a multipurpose room with a kitchenette that includes a refrigerator, microwave, and sink and holds around 125 people, with rectangular and circular tables and chairs available. The Ropewalk Pavilion has approximately 24 picnic tables and a maximum seated capacity of 150 people.

For programs, advance registration is required for all programs with a PARKS DIRECT number, and drop-in admission is accepted only as space permits and is not guaranteed. Programs may be canceled 24–48 hours before they start due to insufficient registrations, and all participants must meet the age requirement listed for each program. For some programs, children must be accompanied by a registered adult who must participate with the child, and unless a program says otherwise, children may not be dropped off and left. Fees for programs are based on residency, and families are asked to keep their email and other contact information up to date on their Parks Direct account prior to registration.

For rentals, all rental times include set-up and breakdown time, and all renters must have a Parks Direct account to complete a rental contract. Security deposit and full payment are due at the time of reservation, and renters are reminded to bring a form of ID and payment for Ropewalk Pavilion rentals. Alcoholic beverages and smoking are not permitted in the park, grilling may be permitted only with a contract and manager approval, and live bands, performances, and DJs are not permitted without manager and Park Police approval. Parking next to the pavilion or on the paved promenade area is not permitted.

The Seed Swap Festival is presented in partnership with M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, Anacostia Watershed Society, and Mount Rainier Public Library. Mount Rainier Nature & Recreation Center offers curriculum-based programs for school groups at their school, on-site, or at a nearby park. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is noted as accredited and having awards in a section titled “Accreditation & Awards.”
