Camp Accomplish is a summer experience from Melwood and Children’s National. Camp Accomplish is an inclusive summer camp for kids and teens with disabilities and chronic health conditions and is open to youth aged 5–18. Melwood and Children’s National Hospital have created this camp experience by uniting the dedication of the Melwood team with the medical expertise and care of the Children’s National team. Melwood brings experience serving individuals with disabilities through inclusive community-based service, and Children’s National offers nationally recognized capabilities in serving children’s chronic health needs. Camp Accomplish subsidizes more than 50% of the cost of each camper, and nearly 1 out of 3 campers receive additional financial aid. This team is supplemented by seasonal employees who share talents in areas such as Arts and Crafts and STEM activities.
Melwood was founded in 1963. The leadership team for Camp Accomplish and the Melwood Recreation Center includes Lulu Moeller, DNP, Director of Melwood Recreation Center and Youth Services; Dr. John Schreiber, Medical Director for Camp Accomplish; Kelly Vanderwende, BSN, RN, Camps Program Manager for Children’s National Hospital; Marcus Whitehurst, Program Director of Camp Accomplish; and Samantha Raley, Office and Admin Manager. Staff credentials include Lulu Moeller holding a Doctorate in Nursing Practice; John M. Schreiber, M.D., serving as Medical Director for Camp Accomplish as well as Director of Electroencephalography, Director of the Epilepsy Genetics Program, Associate Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics, and Neurophysiologist at Children’s National Hospital, and graduating cum laude from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2006. Kelly Vanderwende received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Norwich University and worked in the Cardiology and Nephrology department at Children’s National for 12 years. Caitlin Martin acquired her PATH certification in 2014, and Suse Greenstone is a Registered Horticultural Therapist.
The mission statement for Camp Accomplish is that it is an incredible summer camp open to youth aged 5–18 and that it serves campers with and without disabilities and chronic health conditions while promoting fun, safety, challenge, and friendship for everyone. Testimonials from Children’s National providers describe their experiences at camp, including observations of campers participating in daily routines and activities, pool time, and a talent show, as well as “doctor talks” where campers talk and ask questions among peers with mutual experiences.
