About
FINS Swimming offers swimming and swim lessons throughout the year, including private lessons, small group lessons, training sessions, and specialized clinics. The program also includes Masters (Adult) swim teams in addition to youth programming.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Year-round options with outdoor programs typically running 8–10 weeks and a main indoor program running nine months from September through May; swimmers may participate in outdoor programs between 1 and 5 times per week and in the main indoor program between 1 and 3 times per week.
FINS Swimming was founded in the fall of 2009 by Montgomery County Swim League coaches and alumni. The program states that it is a year-round youth swim program that sets out to give swimmers of all ages a fun and fulfilling experience in the water and that it believes success in the water comes when the environment in the pool and on deck excites and inspires participants. FINS reports having a gifted all-star coaching staff, with an ample number of talented head coaches on deck at every practice and assistant coaches in the water with younger swimmers giving constant hands-on instruction.
FINS Swimming notes that its swimmers range from ages 3 to 18 and may swim once to five times a week all year long, with a wide range of skill levels placed into appropriate groups. The program focuses primarily on technique and perfecting all four strokes before higher-level training, with constant feedback from coaches through communication, correction, and motivation every swim. Many swimmers belong to summer swim teams, and FINS brings summer swimming enthusiasm and fun to every practice, with spring programming tailored to getting swimmers ready for success in upcoming summer swim seasons.
The program offers year-round swimming with flexible scheduling that includes indoor and outdoor options, weekday and weekend practices, and integrated programming with minimal overlap and multi-program discounts. Outdoor programs typically last between 8 and 10 weeks and are geared from advanced training-style instruction to beginner learn-to-swim programs, and at the end of each outdoor season coaches include a race day practice. The main indoor FINS program is a nine-month session from September until the end of May, and FINS offers two swim meets during this indoor season, one in the winter and one in the spring, with swimmers receiving swim caps and t-shirts as part of the main indoor program.
FINS Swimming reports that it is among the most established summer program providers within the Montgomery County swimming community and that, in addition to staffing and designing multiple Montgomery County Swim League programs, it welcomes swimmers from all over the Maryland and Washington, DC area to its outdoor locations. The program states that it regards swimming as an important life skill that should be mastered by all and that high school–aged swimmers prepare for their high school season in the fall or summer swim in the springtime. FINS notes that all listed locations are within 10 minutes of each other and that families can start anytime as long as space is available, with prorated pricing reflected at checkout.
FINS Swimming has received Readers' Pick recognition for Best Kids Swim Lessons and Readers' Pick Finalist for Best Kids Swim Lessons. Parent testimonials describe FINS as teaching a child to swim all four strokes, providing an excellent swimming program, and earning “5 stars,” as well as calling it an “awesome organization” where kids love the coaches and noting that it offers a Masters swim program nearby most of the year for adults. Another parent testimonial describes FINS as a “terrific training and learning program” for their children.
