Camp Olympia describes itself as an educational, instructional summer camp rather than a “babysitting” camp, with activities that are supervised and organized and where children are taught specific skills. The program’s stated goal is to challenge each child to achieve new levels of knowledge, teaching basics such as the correct way to run, catch, throw, and climb, and then giving children time to practice these skills.

Camp Olympia’s summer sports camp was established in the late 1950s and has been operating for over 67 years. The camp was started by Stephen and Elizabeth Benedek, and Stephen was inducted into the Georgetown University Hall of Fame for his coaching of the track team. The program notes that it has been catering to the needs of the community since the late 1950s.

The owner and Camp Director is Andrea Lingwood, who is also Director of Camp Olympia Country Day School and holds a BS in Elementary Education. She is a CHA Advanced Level 4 Certified Horseback Riding Instructor. Individual counselors are trained in or are certified in First Aid, Adult, Infant and Child CPR, and lifeguard training.

Parent testimonials describe children learning horseback riding basics in a small class setting with an observant instructor, and one parent reports that their child can now dive, swim across the pool underwater, climb a rope, and vault after attending Camp Olympia. Other parents describe Camp Olympia as providing a learning experience where their children have learned a lot, grown in many ways, and experienced what they describe as a healthy, challenging, warm environment.
