Horizon Day Camp-Baltimore is a seven-week summer day camp that operates Monday through Friday from approximately 9:30am to 3:45pm, with extended hours available from around 7:30am to as late as 6:30pm to accommodate working parents. It is a full-summer day camp for children with cancer and their siblings, ages 3½–16, who are in active or follow-up treatment for cancer. Children can attend as often as they are able, from a single day to the full seven weeks, and special accommodations can be made depending on when a child is able to attend.
The camp is staffed by counselors, specialists, assistants, and volunteers who are specially trained prior to the camp’s opening, and the on-site Directors have extensive experience with children and camping. The staff-to-camper ratio often exceeds 1:4, and special arrangements can be made for children who require more extensive supervision. The leadership team includes Mark McElrath (Executive Director), Jill Rosato Huey (Director of Development), Shayna Gruner (Camp Director), Lisa Kadish (Camp Registrar), Fran Sonnenschein (Horizon on Wheels Coordinator – Baltimore), and Gabby Reagoso (HorizonWALKS Coordinator).
Horizon Day Camp-Baltimore brings the simple pleasures of childhood back to children struggling with cancer, changing months of loneliness and isolation into summers filled with sunshine, laughter and happiness. It is a member of the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings worldwide through summer day camps, year-round programs, and in-hospital recreational activities, all offered free of charge. Since 2015, Horizon Day Camp has brought joy to over 5,000 children battling cancer and their siblings across Maryland, and Horizon Day Camp-Baltimore started in 2016.
Year-round Horizon Fun-days offer special activity days for campers, some of which include family events, and free transportation is available for Fun-days if needed. The in-hospital program includes counselors, staff, or volunteers visiting hospitalized campers with special surprises and spending time at bedside, and Horizon on Wheels brings camp-style activities into participating hospitals. A virtual camp option, SunriseVX, provides a fun and interactive virtual summer experience for children with cancer and their siblings, hosted by the Sunrise Association. Horizon relies 100% on donations, and every dollar raised supports families in Maryland. One camper family shared, “The best thing about camp this summer was the abundance of joy and anticipation that all of my children experienced every camp day!”
