About
Little Waves Swim Academy offers infant swimming lessons, an infant swim program, and infant swimming instruction using the swim-float-swim method. The program includes a swim survival program and survival swimming skills training, along with beginning stroke development for older children. Lessons use a hands-on, one-on-one approach that is personalized to each child’s age-appropriate level, including infant swimming instruction to children ages 6 months to 8 years.
• Ages: 0–8 years old
• Schedule: One-on-one lessons, 4 days a week (Monday–Thursday), 10 minutes each, in 3–6 week sessions
In four weeks, infants are taught to hold their breath, turn over onto their back, and perform the survival back float unassisted. In six weeks, toddlers and children are taught to swim face down in the water, rotate over to float and rest, and then turn back over to continue to swim. The program describes itself as Maine’s premiere swim survival program and offers life-saving aquatic survival skills in 3–6 weeks, using proven survival skills training to enable a child to swim-float-swim in the event of an accidental encounter with water.
Little Waves Swim Academy is led by Krissy Walkwitz. Krissy has been trained through the Infant Aquatic and Swim-Float-Swim method, has over 200 hours of in-water training, and is a certified Infant Aquatic Survival℠ Specialist. The program states that few programs are willing to teach children under the age of three and that, when they do, it is typically just water acclimation. The stated goal is to equip each child with the necessary skills to survive in water, to provide them with confidence to be an independent swimmer, and to support a life long love for swimming.
