Joy of Coding is created for high schoolers and is open to students age 13 and older who have taken and enjoyed Algebra, understand the concept of variables and functions, can do basic manipulations of functions and variables, and can compute values such as f(0) and f(1) when f(x) = sin(x). Enrollment opens in late January for the Intro to Coding and Intro to AI courses, and Joy of Coding has rolling admissions but encourages interested students to apply as soon as possible. Upon completion of the course, students receive a certificate of accomplishment from University of Michigan ECE to include in college applications.

The instructor, Raj Rao Nadakuditi, is an award-winning researcher and teacher dedicated to making computational subjects accessible to individuals of all ages and from all disciplines. In addition to receiving the Jon R. and Beverly S. Holt Award for Excellence in Teaching, Prof. Nadakuditi has received the DARPA Directors Award, DARPA Young Faculty Award, IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Young Author Paper Award, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, and the Air Force Research Laboratory Young Faculty Award. Students receive individualized support from University of Michigan professors and students, including support from a team of more than 15 University of Michigan Engineering students who provide 1-on-1 support.

Joy of Coding serves a community of over 4500 students from more than 45 states and over 25 countries who have taken and enjoyed the course. The program describes itself as serving the world from Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Past students share that the course inspired them to delve deeper into computer science and exposed them to new concepts and new ways to use these concepts, and one student, Miriam, called taking the course “one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.” Another student, Lalitha, said the coaches are “super helpful” with a quick response time whenever help was needed. A third student, Emma, said she liked that the course was asynchronous so she could work at her own pace, and she described the emails, lessons, and videos as making the program a really interactive and enjoyable experience.
