About

Kids Martial Arts at Japanese Martial Arts Center offers kids martial arts classes that include kids judo and kids karate. The broader dojo programs also include iaido, nihon jujutsu, judo, and karate, as well as special events such as the Kozen Grappling Seminar, Kids Camp Kitchener, Practical Fighting Camp Kitchener Ontario, and the Matsumura Challenge in London, Ontario.

• Ages: 4–12 years old

Most of the kids martial arts instructors are parents, and kids receive private intro lessons with black belt instructors. The program is led by Nicklaus Suino, who was All-Tokyo Champion for four consecutive years between 1989 and 1992 in iaido and has written four books on Japanese martial arts. Suino-Sensei is described in program materials as one of the highest ranked martial artists in the country in his disciplines and consults internationally on strategies for personal and professional growth using the principles of swordsmanship. The program states a mission of offering authentic Japanese martial arts in a safe, systematic setting, with the dojo providing inspiration and guidance while students bring commitment and hard work. Kids martial arts classes are described as being taught in a carefully developed, thoughtful way, with learning disguised as fun and a varied rhythm of class to keep kids interested. Membership is described as one year with the option to opt out any time in the first 60 days, and families can also receive The Exceptional Martial Artist eNewsletter twice each month. The dojo notes that it serves Southeast Michigan, with students coming from many surrounding communities and schools, including Ann Arbor, Dexter, Chelsea, Pinckney, the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, Washtenaw Community College, Saline, Canton, Howell, Brighton, Manchester, Whitmore Lake, Milan, Plymouth, Dundee, and Monroe.
