The building was designed by architect William Kessler & Associates using glass and masonry, soft hues, and large lobby areas with a lot of natural light. The recreation center reopened after an $11 million renovation project funded by the City of Detroit Construction & Demolition Department. A valid membership is required to participate in all programs, classes, and activities, and additional fees for classes, programs, or activities may apply. The Recreation Supervisor is Michael West. The center is named for Coleman A. Young, Detroit’s first African American mayor, who served from 1974 to 1997, served as a Tuskegee Airman during World War II, and was an activist in the Civil Rights Movement.
