The Bloomington Athletic Association has been keeping kids active since 1954 and was organized in 1953. BAA is a 501(c)3 and is one of the largest volunteer sports organizations in the United States, serving over 3,000 youth in 13 sports annually. The BAA Soccer Program is part of this larger organization.
The Bloomington Athletic Association states that it delivers fun, affordable, inclusive, fair, and safe youth sports experiences fueled by passionate volunteers and aspires to provide every child with the opportunity to be active and build life skills through sports participation. Its philosophy has remained to offer youth organized sports programs without tryouts and without regard to ability, at a cost affordable to all, and it offers financial assistance and scholarships based on ability to pay to provide equal opportunity to play for all youth.
BAA notes that the soccer program allows kids of all ages to develop sportsmanship, teamwork, and motor skills while having fun in a family-friendly and safe atmosphere. Age group placement is based on the player’s grade in the upcoming school year. At the Mites and Cubs levels, all players must play at least half of the game, with an exception possible for late arriving players, and no heading is allowed at the Cubs level.
For Mini-Mites, boys play on Saturday mornings from 9:00 am–10:00 am and girls from 10:30 am–11:30 am, from early August through early October. For Mites, the season runs from early August through early October, with boys playing Tuesday and Thursday and girls Monday and Wednesday, and game start times set at 6:30 pm in August, 6:00 pm in September, and 5:30 pm in October. For Cubs, the season runs from early August through mid-October, with boys playing Monday and Wednesday and girls Tuesday and Thursday, and game start times set at 6:30 pm in August, 6:00 pm in September, and 5:30 pm in October. In general, games begin at 6:30 pm in August, move to 6:00 pm in September, and 5:45 pm in October. Rain-outs will not be rescheduled for Mini-Mites and Mites, while Cubs rain-outs will be rescheduled on the Friday evening or Saturday of the next week. Parents must remain on-site with children during instruction and games at Mini-Mites, Mites, and Cubs levels.
For Mini-Mites and Mites, BAA provides a jersey, and players or teams are not to alter BAA-provided shirts. At these levels, each player must provide shin guards, socks that completely cover shin guards, shorts, and well-fitting athletic shoes, and soccer cleats are not required. Baseball cleats or metal cleats are described as dangerous for soccer and are not allowed. Size #3 soccer balls are to be used for Mini-Mites and Mites, and players are asked to provide their own ball if possible because there are a limited number of team balls. For Cubs, BAA also provides a jersey that is not to be altered, and players must provide shin guards, socks that completely cover shin guards, shorts, and well-fitting athletic shoes, with the same rule that soccer cleats are not required and baseball or metal cleats are not allowed. Cubs use size #4 soccer balls, and players are again asked to provide their own ball if possible due to a limited number of team balls.
BAA will provide the training necessary to work games as a soccer referee, and no official certification is required to be a BAA soccer referee. Playoffs and tournaments are offered for Cubs and Juniors as an opportunity for the whole family to celebrate players’ and teams’ progress and have healthy competition.
The leadership team for the Bloomington Athletic Association includes Soccer Commissioner Paul Goodwin; President Will Easton; Vice President – Equipment Sean O'Gara; Vice President – Community Relations Tara Owens; Vice President – Marketing Arianna Dabu; Vice President – Sports Operation Will Easton; Vice President – Sports Operation Virg Senescall; Treasurer Glenn Riemersma; and Administrator/Secretary Stephanie Nicholson.
BAA relies upon donations from individuals, companies, and organizations that provide funds to help ensure all children can participate, and it provides community engagement activities. It notes partnerships with the City of Bloomington and Bloomington School District. Parents, guardians, relatives, and friends are strongly encouraged to volunteer to help their child’s team as a Coach, Assistant Coach, Co-Coach, Timekeeper, Scorekeeper, or in other ways to assist the Coach and team.
