The camp idea started in 1976, and over 45 years later the philosophy is still in place, with Minnesota Hockey Camps making its new home at Breezy Point Hockey Center beginning in the summer of 2021 after being sold in late 2020. The leadership team includes co-founders Chuck “Gringo” Grillo, a longtime NHL scout and executive, and Herb Brooks, the Miracle On Ice coach, along with new owners Chris Stewart, a former NHL player for the Minnesota Wild, Craig Larson, a longtime Minnesota Hockey Camps coach, and Tony Maucieri, a local business owner. Minnesota Hockey Camps has witnessed more than 500 players move on to the NHL, and it states that it boasts one of the best professional conditioning programs in the nation. Groome Transportation provides shuttle service from the Minneapolis Airport (MSP) to the camp, and Minnesota Hockey Camps will pick up and drop off campers from the Brainerd Airport for a round trip fee.

The program has several housing and supervision policies, including upgraded housing available on a limited basis for groups of four to a dorm room, an option for an extra night of lodging for early arrival or late departure, and a counselor in every housing area for all campers under the age of 16. With parental permission, a camper can have a car on campus if it is registered, parents may request key collection, parents must sign a release if the camper is under 18, and breaking car rules once results in being sent home. There is a strict curfew policy for older campers, and gates are locked every night at 9 pm. Minnesota Hockey Camps will search any and all luggage that comes on campus.

The camp has a strict dietary policy that does not allow outside food in care packages or housing areas, all boxes are searched, and any food with nuts is thrown away. A snack box is provided for all campers to share non-nut food items sent in packages, and no outside food or supplements are allowed, with healthy sport supplement options available in the pro shop. Over-the-counter medicine is provided by the athletic training room, no over-the-counter drugs are permitted in camper housing, and all prescription medicine must be turned in to the Athletic Trainer during registration.

Skate sharpening can be purchased as a session option, at registration, and at the snack shack, and is done at the rink. Private on-ice lessons are available as an add-on before checkout, with the option to request a coach and focus areas. An option is available to purchase a gift card on the Square app for camper needs at the snack shack and gift shop. Wifi service is available.

Campers need to bring all of their gear, athletic clothing such as shorts, T-shirts, sweat pants, sweatshirts, good running or workout shoes, bedding such as sleeping bags or sheets and blankets plus pillows, and shower items like shampoo, soap, and towels. Recommended items also include swim suits, sunscreen, and an off-ice stick for stick handling and shooting time if available, with the option to use their on-ice stick if not. Campers can bring electronics such as cell phones, iPods, and iPads, and Minnesota Hockey Camps is not responsible for them. Campers are asked to leave AXE spray at home, and food is not allowed to be brought from outside the camp or kept in housing areas. One testimonial from Chris Stewart, former NHL player for the Minnesota Wild and Calgary Flames, states, “MHC is the place for every athlete to take their skills to the next level.”
