Connected Camps is a not-for-profit organization that offers connected learning experiences in areas such as engineering, architecture, coding, animation, game design, and storytelling, all hosted on custom Minecraft servers. Its mission is to build a global online community where kids build, play, and learn from one another. The program is part of the Connected Learning Alliance, which focuses on mobilizing new technology in the service of equity, access, and opportunity for young people, and it thanks supporters including Reid Hoffman & Michelle Yee, Kaoru Hayashi, Joi Ito, Microsoft Research, the Samueli Foundation, and Siegel Family Endowment.

Connected Camps was started in 2015 by three “girl geeks” and learning scientists with a focus on education and technology. The leadership team includes Mimi Ito (Co-Founder and Executive Director), Katie Salen (Co-Founder and Chief Designer), Victor Lazo (Chief Operating Officer), and board members Barak Berkowitz, Carina Wong, Janella Watson, Joichi Ito, and Lili Cheng. Staff and advisors bring backgrounds in cultural anthropology and learning science, game design and youth development, visual design and communications, English and children’s publishing, computer science and business administration, operations and strategy at the MIT Media Lab, education innovation, creativity and experiential learning, technology entrepreneurship, and AI and research at Microsoft, as well as professional architecture and university teaching.

Programs are run by expert online mentors and use youth tech experts as counselors, who receive multi-year job experience and professional support. Connected Camps offers live online clubs in Minecraft that now support tablets, phones, Chromebooks, and game consoles, including Bedrock support for Survival and Builders clubs. Players can connect to Survival and Builders clubs in Minecraft using a tablet, mobile phone, Chromebook, Switch, Xbox, or PS5, and a computer is not required. The Kid Club Minecraft server is designed for kids ages 8 to 13 and is described as more than just a free, kid-friendly Minecraft server.

Parent feedback includes reports that the class gave one child a chance to play a favorite game with other kids the same age without the foul language and meanness the parent had seen elsewhere while gaming. Another parent reports that their 9-year-old looks forward to the class all week and has a great time with others who share her interests, and that the teacher is kind and patient with the classmates.
