Servant Camp is for children entering 1st to 12th grades. 1st and 2nd graders can join the Pony program as an introduction to the experiences of Servant Camp, and in Minnesota this Pony program is held during the four afternoons of Servant Camp week. 3rd through 12th graders stay overnight, and 12th graders have a morning retreat format with speakers and small groups and then either run the Pony Program or serve as Junior Counselors in 3rd–7th grade units. After the lights go down for the younger campers, campers in 8th grade and older have a coffee house under the big tent. The staff to camper ratio is about 1:4 for 3rd–7th grade and about 1:6 for 8th–10th grade. All of the staff at Servant Camp are volunteers who may use their yearly vacation time so that they can serve at camp. Junior Staff, who are 12th graders, provide leadership to the unit and support the Unit Head and help with the Pony Program. Runners work behind the scenes to build fires, drive to activities, supply drinking water, and more, while Support Staff provide a lounge for staff, organize unit t-shirts, ribbons, and unit snacks, arrange meals to fit specific diets, and do intercession for campers and staff. Afternoon Activity Staff visit camp each day for the afternoon to lead crafts, sports, or games for 8th and 9th grade campers, and adult staff and 12th grade campers plan and run the Pony Program. At the end of camp every year, the staff gather for a dinner to share stories.
The goals of Servant Camp are to grow in friendship with Jesus Christ, to make new friends, and to have fun experiencing new activities. Whether it is playing, singing, sitting around the campfire, laughing, catching frogs, swimming, or climbing, Jesus Christ is seen in everything at Servant Camp. It is all about friendship with Jesus Christ and one another.
The leadership team includes Camp Director Pat Ficker and Program Directors Mike Oberg, Jeanne Oberg, Ginny DeSanto, Kathy Janicki, Stephen Busk, Beth Couch, Janice Mertz, and Chris Marquis. The medical leadership includes Camp Medical Director Dr. Anne Reinbold, APRN, FNP-C; Camp Nurse Rebecca Mahon, BSN, RN; Camp Nurse Lynn Bahta, RN, MPH, CPH; and Camp Physician and Medical Director Emeritus Dr. Paul Zenker, MD. Each counselor receives training in working with youth and undergoes a background check. Camp Medical Director Anne Reinbold is an APRN, FNP-C and completed a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) to become a family nurse practitioner in 2021. Camp Nurse Rebecca Mahon holds a BSN, RN and has worked as a nurse for nine years in a hospital in Minneapolis. Camp Nurse Lynn Bahta is an RN, MPH, CPH, is currently a nurse in public health, formerly worked with hospitalized kids, and has immunizations as her specialty. Camp Physician and Medical Director Emeritus Dr. Paul Zenker is an MD, a pediatrician, and an ER doctor.
If a family lives in South Bend, Indiana, they are instructed to contact Beth Couch to register for the Pony program, and Stephen heads up the South Bend group that travels to Minnesota every year. Theme lunches are mentioned along with a note to see the Packing List for more details, and a Packing Checklist is referenced for campers.
