About
KIDSROCK Summer Camp includes activities such as indoor and outdoor rock climbing, bowling, canoeing, swimming, paddle boarding, non-competitive team sports, and puzzle games. Campers take part in nature adventures like trail navigation, wilderness trekking, sifting through streams for insects, digging through dirt, and walking in the woods in search of critters. The program also offers arts & crafts, talent shows, road biking and trail riding, visits to the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium and the Tweed Museum of Art, studio art and graphic design projects using iPads and traditional materials, and sports such as soccer, badminton, disc golf, spike ball, and ultimate (frisbee).

• Schedule: RSOP offers nine weeks of summer camp, with Classic Camps, Classic Camp Plus, Pharm Camp, Sport Camp, Hiking Camp, Discover Nature Camp, Cosmic Adventure Camp, Get Creative: Explorations in Art and Design, Beginners Climbing Camp, Biking Camp, and Advanced Climbing Camp described as week-long camps running Monday–Friday.
• Price: $225 for Classic Camp (M–F); $250 for Classic Camp Plus (M–F); $250 for Pharm Camp (M–F); $250 for Sport Camp (M–F); $250 for Hiking Camp (M–F); $250 for Discover Nature Camp (M–F); $250 for Cosmic Adventure Camp (M–F); $250 for Get Creative: Explorations in Art and Design (M–F); $250 for Beginners Climbing Camp (M–F); $250 for Biking Camp (M–F); $250 for Advanced Climbing Camp (M–F).
Specialty camps include Hiking Camp, which explores scenic trails around the North Shore, and Discover Nature Camp, which uses nature as the classroom and focuses on active days outside. Cosmic Adventure Camp uses the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium and is guided by astronomy experts and enthusiasts, with activities that explore the cosmos, fun creations, and cosmic investigations. Get Creative: Explorations in Art and Design includes work in UMD studios, visits to the Tweed Museum of Art, and studio art and graphic design using both iPads and traditional materials. Beginners and Advanced Climbing Camps include both indoor and outdoor climbing with skill development that includes knot tying, harness fit, route finding, mock sport leading, practicing correct falling, rappelling, placing traditional climbing protection in rocks, and anchoring concepts, with indoor climbing skills developing up through 5.10 and beyond. Biking Camp includes road biking and trail riding on campus and on multiple Duluth trail systems, including Hartley Park trails, Lester Park Trails, and other local bike trails.
Pharm Camp morning activities are planned by UMD Pharmacy faculty and student staff, Cosmic Adventure Camp morning activities are planned by UMD Planetarium staff, “Get Creative” camp is led by faculty members from UMD’s Department of Art & Design, and Recreational Sports Intramural Staff lead morning activities for Sport Camp. The Recreational Sports Outdoor Program states that safety is at the core of all programming opportunities and that enjoyment is at the heart of its activities. The mission of the Recreational Sports Outdoor Program is to foster active, healthy lifestyles and connections to the natural world, and it collaborates with departments across campus, as well as local, regional, and national organizations to promote participation in physical activity and outdoor experiences.
Each week of KIDSROCK Summer Camp offers a new mix of themed events such as Color Week, Space Week, and Beach Week, with themes that include related activities, projects, special events, and dress-up days. Classic Camps are described as providing an environment for children to be active and creative and to learn within small age-appropriate groups. The program offers nine weeks of summer camp for children ages 5–14 years old, with additional one-week Specialty Camps for kids 8–12 years old. The registration fee includes all equipment, art supplies, instruction, and a camp T-shirt.
Transportation to and from camp must be provided for each camper. Campers are required to bring a bag lunch and snacks, swimsuit and goggles, towel, hat, tennis shoes, and appropriate indoor and outdoor clothing for daily activities and weather conditions. As part of the registration packet, participants receive camp information such as items to bring, camp rules, directional maps, camp itinerary, and participant forms including health forms and a swim form. Hiking Camp requires campers to bring sturdy and comfortable footwear. Biking Camp asks campers to bring their own bike helmet, a bike capable of changing gears, and personal cycling gear, and all personal gear must be inspected and approved by a camp counselor before use. Beginners Climbing Camp notes that KIDSROCK will provide all necessary climbing equipment, but campers are encouraged to bring their own climbing gear, which must be inspected and approved by a camp counselor before use.
