Camp Voyageur has operated as a Wilderness Adventure Camp for boys 10–18 since 1951. The in-camp program includes Mess Hall plaques that list the names of boys catching the biggest fish and swimming to nearby islands. Voyageur’s in-camp program seasons boys for progressively longer canoe trips into the adjacent million-acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and the camp specializes in backcountry travel throughout the Boundary Waters, Quetico, Isle Royale, Apostle Islands, and beyond. Returning campers over age 14 can qualify for Advanced Trips exploring the border lakes from Camp to International Falls and Lake Superior, Quetico Provincial Park, Isle Royale, Apostle Islands, and beyond, and a few teens become Bushwhacker and Big Man leaders on canoe trips.

Camp Voyageur’s daily schedule includes Fitness Clubs at 7:30 a.m., Rise & Shine at 8:00 a.m., Breakfast at 8:30 a.m., Cabin Inspection and Morning Activities at 9:30 a.m., Activity Period 1 at 10:00 a.m., Free Swim at 11:30 a.m., Lunch at 12:30 p.m., Rest Period and Free Time at 1:30 p.m., Activity Period 2 at 2:30 p.m., Free Swim at 4:30 p.m., Dinner at 5:30 p.m., Activity Period 3 at 6:30 p.m., Swim and Free Time at 7:30 p.m., Evening Program at 8:00 p.m., and Lights Out at 10:00 p.m. Campers also have time to play cards, strum the guitar, practice their instruments, and take part in nondenominational grace. Typically two counselors bunk with campers of a similar age.

Community activities include day fishing trips, touring the Soudan Iron Mines, petting the local sled dogs at Wintergreen, and visiting Ely’s International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center. Camp Voyageur meets American Camp Association accreditation standards. The camp is described as unplugged and outdoors, and bare bones camping rejuvenates the soul. Fitness becomes fun at Voyageur sleepaway camp.

Camp Director John Erdmann leads the program, and brother and sisters John, Deb, and Vicky Erdmann champion the Voyageur mission of fostering the personal growth of each kid through group interaction in a wilderness setting. Their children John, Deb, and Vicky have broadened the family mission.
