About

The Fridley/St. Anthony Aquatics Program offers learn to swim lessons, instructional swimming classes, and open recreational swim. Class options include Parent and Child, Preschool Beginner, Preschool Intermediate, Preschool Advanced, and Level 1 through Level 5/6 swim classes. Swim lessons are limited to 4 students per instructor, and all young swimmer lessons are 30 minutes in length with two instructors for more individualized attention.

• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Seasonal sessions with registration windows in late August (fall), mid-December (winter), mid-March (spring, pool closed for repairs), and April (summer); all young swimmer lessons are 30 minutes in length.

The program includes a Parent and Child class for ages 6 months–4 years, with a parent required to accompany the child in the water and plastic pants with tight elastic around the leg worn in addition to a swim diaper or suit. Preschool Beginner is recommended for children 3–4 years old with a 6:2 student/teacher ratio, while Preschool Intermediate and Preschool Advanced are recommended for children 5–6 years old, each with a 6:2 student/teacher ratio. Students must be 6 years old to be in Level 1 and seven years old to be in Level 2, and each level reinforces previously learned skills and introduces new skills.

The swim program focuses on skill progression and safety awareness for all ages from infant to adult, with pool rules posted in the pool area and staff decisions concerning behavior and activities made for everyone’s safety. The pool is 3 1/2 feet deep at the shallow end, and the pool temperature is set at 82.5 degrees due to its multi-use status. Children under 50 inches must have a parent in the water during recreational/open swim times, children 5 years old and younger may enter the men’s or women’s locker rooms with a parent/guardian, and children 6 years and older should select the locker room that aligns with their gender or where they feel most comfortable.

Parents of Parent/Child levels may place personal items on the benches, parents of preschool levels are seated on benches along the wall of windows on the pool deck, and parents of Level 1–6 participants are asked to be off the pool deck and seated in the bleachers during lessons. Each participant is given their own equipment during class, staff disinfect all swim lesson equipment before and after each class, and there is a limited amount of equipment used. If Fridley Pool lessons are full, families can register at the St. Anthony site, and learn to swim lessons are offered at both locations with the same programming and instructors.

The Fridley/St. Anthony Aquatics Program has partnered with St. Anthony-New Brighton Public Schools to hire a shared swim lead between the two locations. The program is part of Fridley Community Education, led by Stephen Keeler, Director of Community Education, and follows the mission, “We are committed to providing lifelong learning opportunities for all ages!” Fridley High School, within the same district, has been voted Best Public School.
