Story Book Lodge Christian Camp is a faith-run Christian camp offering Bible-focused summer camps and weekend retreats where people of all ages can grow in their faith, make lasting friendships, and enjoy God's creation. Story Book Lodge exists to promote the Lord Jesus Christ and the Word of God, with a stated desire for those who believe in Him to grow strong in their faith through His Word and for those who do not know Him as Savior to come to believe in Him as they hear God's Word. Story Book Lodge Camp has looked to God for support in every way since 1948, and the first Christian camp took place in 1948 under the direction of “Uncle” Ben and “Aunt” Jean Tuininga.
The camp property of 45 acres was purchased by Elizabeth Speriestersbach in 1929. The facilities include themed cabins from traditional children's stories, a state-of-the-art gym called King's Court, a dining hall, a chapel, and more. Home-cooked food at the camp receives raving reviews from both campers and staff. Staff members volunteer without a promise of pay.
Jerry Brown and Jordan Juvland take care of maintenance wherever it is needed. Tori Lewicki is in charge of the camp kitchen, along with showing hospitality and cleaning up as needed. Uncle Bill Howell is the camp director and organizes the camps as needed. Young Adults Retreat registration is open, and Summer Camp Registration opens February 1.
One teen camper, Isaac T., describes Story Book Lodge Christian Camp as “basically a second home in the summer and a great getaway in the winter,” and mentions enjoying swimming, sports, games, and hanging out with friends, as well as worship, messages, and food. Parents and staff Peter and Joanna K. describe it as a place where “all who visit are equal” and say that attendees are “showered with truth from the Bible about all things eternal.” Parent Carolyn S. says that sending children there has allowed them to develop relationships with other Christians from different places and backgrounds and notes that her kids have also served as camp staff. Teen camper Chloe H. states that she would not be able to attend if it were not a free camp, says she was saved at Story Book when she was eleven, and says that counselors and speakers “meet you where you are in your faith” and “always give you something to encourage you, convict you, or just something to think about more.”
