About
ForeUs (Minnesota Minority Junior Golf Association) includes caddying, golf lessons, golf outings, a life skills curriculum, and a youth chip and putt competition. The program trains up to 40 youth annually with a mostly volunteer team and focuses on placing participants at the best private golf courses across the metro. It is operated on a relatively low budget and is driven by a volunteer board.
Since 1987, ForeUs has been giving Twin Cities youth of all backgrounds and experience levels a chance to learn the game of golf and earn extra income and life skills through caddying. In 1987, founder F. Clayton Tyler organized a fundraiser with friends and formed what was then called the Minnesota Minority Junior Golf Association. The mission of ForeUs is “To foster the development of Twin Cities youth by providing income-earning caddying opportunities, golf lessons and post-secondary scholarships, and providing peer and mentor support, teaching the life skills inherent in the game of golf.”
Leadership for ForeUs includes founder F. Clayton Tyler, with Evans Scholar alumni Brandon Schenck, Ryan Schenck, and Nate Mussell assuming expanded leadership roles in 2025. The program provides post-secondary scholarships and peer and mentor support, and it includes a life skills curriculum layered in to provide a foundation for future careers. The program is designed to provide professional opportunities through caddying, and participants have earned internships and full-time positions, including at Mortenson Construction, through caddying connections.
Four participants have earned an Evans Scholarship, a full-ride to the University of Minnesota, including two ForeUs alumni who are Evans Scholars currently, and Bryson Schenck became the fifth caddie from ForeUs to receive the Evans Scholarship. Several graduates have earned athletic scholarships to play golf at Kansas State and Concordia University. ForeUs participants have also won the 3M Championship youth chip and putt competition.
Community involvement includes a partnership with the Tiger Woods Foundation, partnerships afoot with the PGA Tour and 3M, and a more official partnership with Minikahda Golf Club creating course ambassadors and laying the foundation for more caddie opportunities. Participants have worked hands-on with Tiger Woods through a Tiger Woods Foundation clinic and elite golf camp, and ForeUs participants have taken part in a community event with John Thomas of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
One graduate shared, “The caddie program wasn’t just an opportunity to gain financial resources over the summer – it was so much more. We were placed in environments that allowed us to see beyond the streets of the northside and get immersed in experiences we typically wouldn’t have access to. We were able to listen in on collegial business conversations and network with doctors and lawyers. Greatest of all though, we were able to learn a game for which I have grown to love.”
