About
ForeUs (Minnesota Minority Junior Golf Association) offers youth the chance to learn the game of golf, take part in caddying, and join golf outings. Participants receive professional golf lessons and take part in a life skills curriculum alongside their golf and caddie activities. The program includes a golf playing component with regular golf outings and professional lessons that was added in 2008.
ForeUs states that its mission is “to develop the next generation of caddies who exemplify professionalism, service, and integrity, preparing underserved youth for real-world opportunities in golf and beyond.” ForeUs began as a caddie program and later re-directed its focus to placing participants at private golf courses across the metro. The organization, originally called the Minnesota Minority Junior Golf Association, was formed in 1987, and has been described as giving Twin Cities youth a chance to learn golf since 1987 and inner-city, low-income, and minority youth a chance to learn golf since 1997. A mostly volunteer team trains up to 40 youth annually and provides ongoing resources throughout the season, using caddying as an opportunity to learn responsibility and build professional contacts, with a life skills curriculum layered in to provide not just a summer job but a foundation for future careers.
The founder is F. Clayton Tyler, and Evans Scholar alumni Brandon Schenck, Ryan Schenck, and Nate Mussell have taken on expanded leadership roles, with Brandon returning as Chairman effective 2025. ForeUs has partnerships with the Tiger Woods Foundation, the PGA Tour, 3M, and several private clubs, and participants have attended a Tiger Woods Foundation elite golf camp and taken part in a clinic hosted by Tiger Woods for a dozen ForeUs participants in Minneapolis. ForeUs participants have also been involved in a community event with John Thomas of the Minnesota Timberwolves and in a 3M Championship youth chip and putt competition, which ForeUs participants won in 2008. Some participants have received athletic scholarships to play golf at Kansas State and Concordia University, and one graduate received an internship and later a full-time position with Mortenson Construction because of connections made while caddying for a top executive.
Five caddies from ForeUs have earned the Evans Scholarship, a full-ride to the University of Minnesota: Tasha Phillips (the first ForeUs caddie to earn the scholarship, in 2004), Karah VueBenson (2014), Brandon Schenck (the first male ForeUs participant to earn the scholarship, in 2018), Ryan Schenck (2020), and Bryson Schenck (2022). A testimonial from an unnamed graduate describes the caddie program as more than a way to gain financial resources over the summer, noting that participants were placed in environments beyond the streets of the northside, were able to listen in on collegial business conversations, network with doctors and lawyers, and learn a game the graduate grew to love.
