About

Adventures in Cardboard offers live-action adventure gaming that includes building castles, designing weapons and armor out of cardboard, and creating individual props, costumes, arms, and armor. Campers take part in theater and theatrical activities, tragic fantasy role playing, free role playing, and free role play and building in the castle village. The program also features battle games and live action games where participants can defend their lands from opposing houses and monsters, construct giant castles, labyrinthine villages and fortified cities, battle on trails, fields and shorelines, seek out lost relics of eldritch power, play capture the flag, search for treasure (relics), play in the woods, and join tactical and exploratory games on the trails, along with swimming and boating.

• Ages: 8–16 years old
• Schedule: Full days Monday–Friday, 9am–3pm

Professional staff artists and teachers lead all activities at Adventures in Cardboard. The program’s mission statement is that Adventures in Cardboard seeks to re-inspire community-oriented, creative play, both theatrical and tactically competitive, in beautiful wild places. The program notes strong staffing with about one staff person for every four or five campers and states that camps feature live action games, free role playing, and cardboard construction, with a plethora of cooperative and theatrical activities available every week. Adventures in Cardboard states that battle play and other competitive activities can be avoided entirely and that it is for girls and all genders, including girls and non-binary kids, with most weeks of camp at least one-third girls and nonbinary kids and several houses at least half-filled with girls and/or non-binary kids unless adventurers instruct otherwise. The organization reports that most of its post-consumer cardboard is generously supplied by an unspecified partner and that buses are scheduled from Minneapolis to Plymouth, Hastings, Bloomington, Spring Lake Park Reserve, and French Regional Park.

Parent testimonials describe Adventures in Cardboard as “one of the best camps in the Twin Cities” and “the BEST camp ever,” with parents reporting that their children enjoyed building weapons and castles, writing spells and incantations, playing capture the flag, searching for treasure, and playing in the woods. Multiple parents state that their children called it the best camp they had ever attended, a favorite camp, or the highlight of their summer or year, and several note that their kids came home “totally wiped out from all the awesomeness” and continued working on weapons and armor at home. Parents also describe the staff as engaged, supremely creative, well organized, and amazing, and one parent comments that the camp “highlights medieval history, promotes creativity, theater and teamwork, and is just really fun.” Several parents mention that their children are eager to return, hope to become camp leaders someday, or plan to sign up for additional weeks.
