About

Great River SC Recreational Soccer offers recreational soccer that includes small-sided games, goalie training, and Tot Soccer. The program also offers a FREE Rec Coaching Clinic for volunteer coaches and uses small-sided game modifications such as reduced numbers of players, smaller fields, smaller balls, and smaller goals, with small-sided games attempting to be based on MYSA rules. Coaches are encouraged to rotate positions so players experience multiple roles, including goalkeeper, and recreational play emphasizes equal opportunity with coaches encouraging all positions.

• Ages: 5–10 years old

The program states that recreational soccer emphasizes development, exploration, and fun. Programs are run by a volunteer board, and one volunteer coach is needed for about every eight kids, with volunteers receiving a refund of their child’s registration fee at the completion of the season. Flexible age-combining is used to help ensure full and fun games, and small-sided games are favored to enhance skill development, increase playing time, enhance excitement, increase exercise, and better maximize available field space. The program notes that there is no heading in recreational soccer games or during practice, and all Tot and Recreational registrations for 2026 will open on January 1.

Families are informed that no jewelry is allowed during games and practices, including earring studs from new piercings. Shin guards are required for all players and must be worn under socks at all practices and games, and soccer cleats are optional but highly recommended, while non-soccer cleats such as baseball, softball, or football cleats are not allowed. Each team receives a colored t-shirt at the beginning of each season, any shorts, socks, and shin guards may be used, and a soccer ball is required for practices, with U5–U8 using a size 3 ball and U9–U12 using a size 4. The program states that it provides quality recreational soccer to kids from Monticello, Big Lake, Becker, Elk River, Otsego, Clear Lake, Clearwater, Maple Lake, Annandale, Buffalo, St. Michael, Albertville, South Haven, and more.
