Adaptive Recreation within these programs offers a range of activities for children and adults who have distinctive ways of moving, communicating, or processing information and uses adaptive formats. Youth activities are offered year-round, preschool activities use play-based learning, and camps allow children to explore new interests, make friends, and build confidence. Individual programs are tailored to the specific needs and interests of each child, and sports activities include chances to stay active, learn new skills, and develop teamwork and sportsmanship. The Park and Recreation Department uses volunteer coaches for many youth programs, and all volunteer coaches must complete a background check each year.

Family Open Swim at Owatonna Middle School has two lifeguards on duty and the diving boards open. All children 12 years of age or under must be accompanied by a parent at Family Open Swim, and children wearing lifejackets must stay within arm’s reach of a parent at all times and remain in the shallow end of the pool. A swim test is given before any child enters the deep water or uses the diving boards, and there is no morning lap swim at Owatonna Middle School if inclement weather causes Owatonna schools to have a 2-hour late start or close.

Lifeguard Training requires participants to become certified American Red Cross Lifeguards and includes prerequisites such as swimming 300 yards continuously, swimming 40 yards to retrieve a 10-pound brick from 10 feet of water and returning it 40 yards using only a kick while holding the brick with two hands on the chest, being 15 years old by the end of the class, attending all classes to pass, and accepting that there is no refund if they do not pass. Water Safety Instructor Training prepares instructors to teach children and adults water safety, survival, and swimming skills and to give community water safety presentations, with prerequisites that include being 16 years old when class begins, attending all classes to pass, no refund if they do not pass, and knowing back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, and front crawl proficiently for at least 25 yards each. Water aerobic classes are offered seasonally at River Springs Water Park from June through August, and American Red Cross Swimming Lessons and American Red Cross Lifeguard certification are part of the program’s credentials.

The department states that Adaptive Recreation emphasizes inclusivity and that everyone is welcome to join activities, be active, and enjoy the outdoors together. It also states that it provides recreational opportunities to everyone and collaborates with other community initiatives throughout the year.
